Lessons Learned Veteran Podcast

Enjoy the newest veteran podcast by Lori Norris. Celebrating its launch on Veterans Day 2020, Lessons Learned For Vets Podcast explores details from veterans who successfully transitioned to the corporate world, vetrepreneurs who chose a different kind of career path, and recruiters from organizations. Q&A sessions with service members who are transitioning out of the military. Each veteran podcast episode is packed with keen insight, advice for current business practices, and actionable tasks that military personnel can implement into their own transition to a post-military career. On a mission to teach veterans how to successfully navigate their military transition since 2005, Lori Norris hosts the show and skillfully incorporates her ability to translate the language of all branches of military service. Her conversations with diverse guests illuminate relevant career guidance, resources for eager small business owners and the perspective of recruiters and talent acquisition specialists who are searching for veteran hires with applicable skill sets. Veterans on Lessons Learned for Vets explain the keys to their success as well as the challenges they did not anticipate, so that those who transition after them may take note and avoid repeating their mistakes. Not shying away from difficult topics, some guests even discuss how to navigate your transition while fighting against Post-traumatic Stress (PTS), when to walk away from a successful corporate career because its not a good fit for you, and many more subjects that arent always covered through the usual channels. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, roughly 2/3 of veterans leave their first post-military job. The same survey quoted more than four-in-ten veterans as saying the military didnt prepare them for the transition to civilian life. This podcast was created to change that statistic. At the end of every episode, Lori says that if you learned just one thing that will help smooth your path to post-military success, then she achieved her goal. The Lessons Learned for Vets podcast is intended for service members who want actionable tasks in order to prepare for their post-military careers. You can listen when its convenient for you, instead of cramming years worth of knowledge into one week. Depending on who you ask, there are steps you can take right out of Basic Trainingso its never too soon to start thinking about your next career chapter. Episodes are released every Wednesday morning and the podcast can be found at Lessons Learned For Vets Podcast or on all the major channels.   iTunes Spotify Pandora Amazon Music Stitcher Please consider volunteering today! Company Culture

Whether its at a world headquarters or one of the many offices or manufacturing plants around the world, everyone remembers their first day taking the plunge into the corporate world. At first, obvious things like how people are dressed or noticing if employees generally seem happy are what a person may think sets a company culture, but thats just the tip of the iceberg. The deeper portion of company culture involves its personality, character, shared beliefs, and values. This is the bit that will take a new employee some time to understand since its often only implied and not written in a manual. Also, the larger the company, the longer it will take to truly understand how the matrix of norms come to life. These cultural items include, but are not limited to, meeting norms, openness to hearing ideas, work-life balance, employee recognition, fun being incorporated into work, approach to innovation, building trust, identifying toxic teams, and the preferred method that employees communicate. For example, meeting norms vary, and while company A seems to be ok with employees coming in late and using their phone or laptop throughout the meeting, company B looks at it negatively and considers it poor time management skills. Another example is around how people interact with senior management. Company A employees are confident in sharing issues or risks immediately with a leader so a timely business decision can be made, while company B employees fear that bringing the news will look poorly on them and they will try to fix the issue without leadership knowing. The latter usually ends badly because the issue almost always gets so out of hand that the leader must be informed. In this case, the leader often states that they wish that someone would have been told them months ago when the issue was identified. Nowadays, work-life balance is ranked as a top concern by employees, so its important to understand this before committing to a company. For example, company A is flexible with parents working around their kids schedules and being remote when needed, but company B is a bit strict with the in-office hours of 8:30 am to 5 pm. While company B claims to be flexible, all employees know that leaving before 5 pm or not being face-to-face will limit promotions and bonuses. One item that is very important but can only be learned over time (much like the military) is the companys language. Not English, French, etc., but its manner of speaking and using homegrown words and the 1000s of acronyms that are often specific to the one company. Never be afraid to ask people what an acronym represents, the same one is often used by multiple teams and can mean different things. The best way to understand a companys culture is to research reviews and speak to current and former employees before accepting a position. While culture can change, its often very difficult and can take many years to accomplish. I have seen entire change management teams established to try and tackle culture, but it takes perseverance and a strong commitment from the top leadership in both time and resources.   Shared with permission from Bryan Ostrowski The post Company Culture appeared first on VETS2INDUSTRY.

Career Transition What Does A Great Opportunity Look Like?

Expanding my horizons I have been trying to figure out a way to broach this and get some dialog going on this subject. Over the past few months I have been talking to a variety of people from all kinds of different backgrounds, different skill sets, trying to figure out how I could help them connect to great opportunities. As fate would have it, I ran into a good friend at a networking event last Wednesday evening and the glimpse he gave me of his successful transition makes for a great segue. I had met this person through volunteering at a Centurion Military Alliance transition event over a year ago. I was surprised when he handed me his business cardIt was not the popular Fortune 500 company I thought he received an offer from. Instead, it was a small, 180+ employee, 8a Women-Owned business. The Fortune 500 offer had fallen through and for him, it was the best thing that could have happened. My friend was excited, happy, confident and looking out over the horizon seeing nothing but great things. As I connect with more and more people, I get the vision of this huge chasm out there keeping extremely talented people with great value to offer from connecting with the organizations that need them. Right now in San Antonio there are over 22,000 open positions with over 5,400 of those being leadership positions, (Source Indeed). I know there is a lot of junk out there. Still, there has never been a better time to find a position. Over the last 40 years, I have basically worked for four different organizations. None of them were household names or even companies you have ever heard of. Throughout my career my family pretty much could never figure out what I actually did. In every case, leaders took a chance on me and gave me an opportunity to serve the mission, build an organization and ultimately be a difference maker.   So what does a good opportunity look like? It starts with a leader willing to take a chance on youThe rest is up to you.   With permission from the author, Bernard Beaullieu.
