DoD Panel Urges New, Single Health Agency

An internal Pentagon task force is recommending the creation of a single defense health agency that would have broader reach and responsibilities than the current Tricare Management Activity, but would leave command of military treatment facilities within the individual services.

According to the final report by the Task Force on Military Health System Governance, which has been sent to Congress but not publicly released, the proposed Defense Health Agency would streamline "shared health care support services" such as Tricare, pharmacy programs, medical education and training, information technology, research and development, logistics, acquisitions and more.

The agency would be led by a three-star officer reporting to the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs and "could be designated a combat support agency to fulfill support functions for joint operating forces," according to the report, a copy of which was obtained by Military Times.
