Killed in action (KIA) is a casualty classification generally used by militaries to describe the deaths of their own forces at the hands of enemy combatants. The United States Department of Defense, for example, says that those declared KIA need not have fired their weapons but have been killed due to hostile attack.
Missing in action (MIA) is a casualty classification assigned to armed services personnel who are reported missing during active service. They may have been killed, wounded, become a prisoner of war, or deserted. If deceased, neither their remains nor grave has been positively identified. Becoming MIA has been an occupational risk for service personnel for as long as there has been warfare.
A prisoner of war (POW, PoW, PW, P/W, WP, PsW, enemy prisoner of war (EPW) or "missing-captured") is a person, whether combatant or non-combatant, who is held in custody by an enemy power during or immediately after an armed conflict. The earliest recorded usage of the phrase is dated 1660.
